文化差异(Culture Difference):种族 National race The whole question of the changing role of Blacks in American society as been the subject of newspaper articles around the world so frequently that visitors to the United States do not know what to expect when they arrive. They may be surprised when they see that Blacks and Whites work side by side in offices , factories , and schools across the country . The majority of Blacks in the United States, however, live in and around only a small number of American cities. Many dark-skinned visitors arrive in the United States fearing personal attack or expecting various degrees of racial prejudice. Some forms of discrimination [1] still exist ,unfortunately, especially in the areas of the housing , schools , and jobs . The school equality is still more a dream than a reality. There are still too many areas of the country where Black Americans do not enjoy the same full opportunities as White Americans . However, the vast majority of American s are working , studying , and sharing public places together. This was not true even a few years ago in some parts of the country , but progress is steadily being made . You will be able to observe the improvement in race relations as soon as your plane lands . You will see it in the airport, in public buses and trains , in theaters , restaurants , rest room, in sops and libraries , in offices and factories . Close personal friendships between Blacks and Whites , full trust and social relationships are still not common , except in certain areas, However, even in this - the slowest area of progress-there has been change , especially among young people. Culture Difference 发表日期:2005-04-22 10:58:52 作者:洪恩在线 It is not a novel knowledge that culture difference exists between eastern and w estern countries. But not until I heard the lecture given by a Chinese scholar, who has been lived in Australia for several years, did I came to understand that how different it is. The scholar summarized that we, as Chinese, prefer to think in a spiral, casual way, while western people, more often than not, are fond of a linear, business-i s-business way. Supporting the idea, he named out examples he himself experience d while staying in Australia. Here are some excerpts. Firstly, line up matter. If you are in China, it is not rare to see that a crowd of people throng in the supermarket, trying to get service first. People in Ch ina do line up, the scholar said in a humorous tone, but they prefer to line up at a horizontal way. In contrast, in western countries, say, in Australia, people always line up, no matter in a big bank or a small grocery store. And they take it for granted. Lin ing up has long since become part of their life that they scarcely doubt it or g row impatient while doing it. Secondly, first come, first served. Though in words it is a normal principle her e in China, it’s mostly not the case in reality. Take an example of what usuall y happens in a bank. Here when we are in a middle-sized bank, and suppose we are talking with the cashier, it always tends to have someone butt in, claiming tha t his or her request takes only one second. And it seems that we have already been accustomed to it. So has the cashier. But in western countries, it never applies. It is always rude that you butt in whil e the cashier is serving his customer. No matter how little time your request co sts, the cashier, more often than not, is likely to turn you down. Only one cust omer at a time is his principle. Thirdly, change stuff. Suppose I am in a shopping mall and the stuff I purchase cost me 142 RMB. While lining up at the casher’s and happening to check my wall et, I find I have 200 RMB and two one-yuan coins. What will I do? To give the ca shier 200 RMB, or give him 200 RMB and the two one-yuan coins so that he could r eturn me 60 RMB, which is more convenient for both of us. I think when the Chinese were in this situation, they would mostly choose the la tter one. But the scholar said, in Australia, they won’t do so. He then told th at he himself did try it once, and he thought it was self-evident to do so. But the cashier did not understand. So the scholar latter on summarized that western people are prone to lack of fle xibility while doing their work. Then how about us in their eyes? They think we Chinese have a tendency to make things complicate. What an interesting contrast! Here I don’t intend to tell which is better and which is worse. What I try to s ay is just that we might well be in conformity with the customs and be aware of the culture differences while being abroad. Like the saying goes—while you are in Rome, do as Romans do. If you don’t want to put yourself in the public, bear ing all this in mind is perhaps the best policy. That value is egalitar ianism. The principle that people should be treated equally. When the bank teller insists on attending one customer at a time the principle i s not "only one customer at a time" it is "this customer waited in line and so w ill you, no matter how tall, how well dressed or how loud your voice." And you can be sure if the customer is a poor working man and the impatient man is a wel l dressed business man, the customer will very bruskly insist on his rights not to be interrupted. A well run bank will have a customer service person who can answer questions, but people doing transactions must wait their turn. My impres sion of a business or a nation where people are not treated equally in the marke tplace and a bully can obtain service without waiting is a place where there is a class oriented culture and/or where one can bribe one …………[文章太长,没有全部显示,点击本文标题阅读全文] Re:Culture Difference caroline.(caroline) 2K 05.04.20 12:25 Dear Tim, The lecture given by the scholar is mainly on English learning. That's for he na med such examples. He just aimed to tell the audience how important to understan d a culture is, which is different from our motherland. What you said is indeed right. And I am with you on this. The corruption in Chi na is rampant these years, you relate it with class. Well, I haven't thought abo ut it. But I do agree that the idea of class roots in many people's mind. Social responsibility The British generally have a sense of social responsibility. Some people reached a very high "Lei Feng" realm. There is only one China "Lei Feng", but I have to say that Britain's "Lei Feng" absolutely more than one, but also more than 10. This sense of social responsibility is manifested in many forms, some of us in the eyes of Chinese people a little bit difficult to understand. My landlord did not fly the Green Party is to her beliefs. Last year, the Lebanese war, 100,000 British people sacrifice rest time Saturdays to London demonstrations are peaceful. There are a few people intruded into the Scottish RAF base to see if a stop in Israel Yun bomb American aircraft, and so on. But best embodies a sense of social responsibility is a British non-governmental organizations and volunteers. In 2005 the United Kingdom the number of volunteers for 20400000, at least once a month to participate in voluntary action. Control Britain 60 million the total population, it should be said that this figure is impressive. The British Ministry of the Interior estimates, the annual contribution made by volunteers the economic value of over 25 billion pounds. Britain has a large number of charitable organizations (charities), or in the traditional sense of the existence of the charity as the main purpose of the nonprofit organization. Britain in the Middle Ages on a church set up a charitable cause, 400 years ago the world's first charitable cause of a specialized legal norms. So charitable organizations in the United Kingdom has a long history, and there is broad, mature enormous impact. Tolerance British society is very tolerant with a long characteristics. Here are many reasons, religious, historical, demographic composition and so on are all reasons. Tolerance is the basic content of the first maximum tolerance of different views, allowing all kinds of views published exchanges. Tolerance is a necessary condition for democracy. As a famous statement said: I do not agree with your point of view, but the expression of the death to defend your rights. Tolerance also means that we should respect other ethnic groups of people, other cultures. Finally, the United Kingdom also represents tolerance asylum, which is accepted in other parts of persecution of people ran to the refugees and so forth here. The Ministry of the Interior has specialized institutions dealing with these issues, there are specialized court related case. We all know that the fact is: in Victoria era, Marx lived in London for a long time (the Prussian authorities and the Belgian government expelled), the use of the British Museum's library collection, in his theoretical research, writing "Das Kapital" and and Engels together in 1848 in London issued the "Manifesto of the Communist Party." It is entirely possible that no British tolerance, not Marxism. Creativity Britain has a strong culture of the creative factor, or the atmosphere of the community as a whole is to encourage innovation, and appreciate the various means of differentiating itself (here also tolerant factors play a role). Weeks said that China is to encourage innovation, but we should recognize the contrast from the relatively conservative society as a whole, people who lack the means of differentiating itself understanding, encouragement and protection. From a historical point of view, the creation of the British invented or created by the British is a lot of scientific theories, such as Newton and Darwin's theory. There are many innovations and inventions in our everyday life. Casually can cite examples are: A modern sense, the postal system; frames; modern sense, the railway mode of transport; Metro: First lines connecting the northern region is London Paddington to Farringdon line, in 1863 opened; MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging technology, and so on. However, we recognized the greatest invention is the parliamentary system, the entire western England is the birthplace of parliamentary democracy. This topic is very large, say a few individual needs. Democracy and the rule of law This referred to the British tradition and system, we must look back at history. History is very complicated, but we can select several of the most important scenes, or they may be called debris: "Great Charter", John Locke, Thomas POON and Robert Owen. British history is the most important document "Magna Carta", the English called Grand Charter, which is the original Latin, called Magna Carta. The basic background is in the June 10, 1215, England's aristocracy who because of dissatisfaction with the autocratic King to unite, the threat of force, in consultation with the Kings a lease for part of the King to give up power, respect for the independence of the judiciary, so that the monarchy by law norms. King agreed to the request of the aristocracy, nobility is to swear allegiance to the king. This document is a British parliamentary democracy and the legal system and starting point. "Magna Carta" is the historical status: British common law system foundation. During the Middle Ages, Scotland, England has its own Parliament, and of course the very different now, belongs to the sovereign rule of procedure organs. 1707 Scotland and England's Congress today, the merger of the British Parliament. John Locke (John Locke 1632-1704) Lockhart most important contribution was his theory of political theory, the theory of governance. He was at Oxford University studying and teaching for 15 years. Late in the 17th century, that is from 1666 after more than 30 years, Locke wrote several of the now very famous book and political papers, which are generally classified as political thesis "government", a Chinese translation of domestic Commercial Press edition. "On" is the most basic view is opposed monarchical power God granted. This is the earliest human rights theories. Locke also first to propose the distribution of power and government restrictions, that the executive power and legislative power should be separated, but in order to prevent an arbitrary way, the legislative power should be higher than that of the executive power. Locke vigorously advocate tolerance (toleration) the spirit of this end was made papers. Locke's thinking on these people who later had a great influence. Decentralization view was later French philosopher Montesquieu to develop into a separation of powers theory, freedom and human rights thinking of the founding father of the United States Thomas Jefferson and others to accept and deepen; Voltaire's thinking on the Lockerbie to France , greatly influencing the French Enlightenment and the French Revolution later. Incidentally, the death was buried in the Lockerbie Oxford University's Christ Church College cathedral, if you to the University of Oxford's largest colleges visited, we can see the signs on the ground. Thomas POON (Thomas Paine 1737-1809) is a 18th century British scholar and revolutionary activists. This is a rare in the history of British legend, life in the United Kingdom, France, the United States spent. He is like the history of China who wrote "Revolutionary Army," Rong Zou. In January 1776 he was "common sense" (Common Sense) published a book entitled The British North American colonies independent promote the booklet as immediately as wildfires burn times of the entire North American colony, circulation of more than 120,000 (then colonial North America residents were only 4 million people, including illiterate). This book can be said to be North America "Declaration of Independence" the prelude. In March 1791潘恩published a "human rights" a book (Rights of Man), the advocate of human rights, warmly supported by the French Revolution. He did not speak French, but France was awarded the title of honorary citizenship, elected to the French National Assembly. 潘恩in Lewes now lived in the house is a small house museum, I was fortunate to read, full of respect. Robert Owen (Robert Owen 1771-1858) is a well-known history of the socialist thinkers, philanthropists, the British his honorific title "Father of cooperatives." Prime Minister Tony Blair in 1999 in a speech said to him (the foundation of the Labor Party). Owen origin impoverished, stem from apprentice from the last owner of a textile company. He attached particular importance to solving the problems of poverty, and in their own treatment plants to improve staff initiated the cooperative movement, immigrants in the United States to develop a harmonious zone experiment. He also proposed a set of educational theory (education combined with productive labor, universal compulsory education, etc.). He's thinking of the 19th century and the cooperative movement closely linked to the trade union movement, Marxism and the subsequent formation of the Labor Party's birth (1900), and so have had a far-reaching impact. These historical events and figures on the British today still play an influence. To learn more about how some British history, contribute to understanding of the United Kingdom, the British understand, adapt to British culture. (

Differences between Chinese and American culture We might think that Chinese and Americans are totally different people. Not only the way they look different, but also the different cultures. So, what are the differences between Chinese and American culture? Most Chinese families like to cook the meals at home. The family members sit around the table and share the dishes on the table together. Even when they are having their meals in restaurants, they eat in the same way too. But in America, just part of the Americans have their meal at home with their family members. For example, partings for the Chinese involve a certain amount of ritual and a great deal of one-upmanship. The Chinese feel they must see a guest off to the farthest feasible point-----down flight of stairs to the street below or perhaps all the way to the nearest bus stop. Any protests are to no avail, through you had said “Don’t bother to see me off” ritual at every landing. If you try to go fast to discourage the hosts from following, they are simply put to the discomfort of having to flee after you. Better to accept the inevitable. On the contrary, for American people, they just said “goodbye” and go back to do other work. Another difference is what do you say when you part from someone? “Go slowly.” Not farewell or Godspeed, but “go slowly”. To the Chinese it means “Take care.” or “Watch your step.” Or some such caution, but translated literally it means “Go slow.” American and Chinese culture in the responses for a hostess are at polar opposites. An American hostess, complimented for her culinary skills, is likely to say, “Oh, I’m so glad you liked it, I cooked it especially for you.” Not so a Chinese host or hostess(often the husband does the fancy cooking), who will instead apologize profusely for give you “nothing” even slightly edible honor by providing proper dishes. 补充: The same rules hold true with regard to children. American parents speak proudly of their children’s accomplishments, telling how Johnny made the school team or Jane made the honor well. Not so Chinese parents, whose children ,even if at the top of their class in school, are always so “naughty”, never studying ,never listening to their elders, and so forth. The last and also the most distinctive difference between American culture and Chinese culture is the Chinese take pride in “modesty”; the Americans in “straight forwardness”. That modesty has left many a Chinese hungry at an American table, for Chinese politeness calls for three refusals before one accepts an offer, and the American hosts take a “no” to mean “no”, whether it’s the first, second, or third time.采纳哦 本回答被提问者采纳

This is not true in the United States, where success usually results from hard work , education, skill, and personal initiative , America is truly a "do-it-yourself" society ; success is not dependent on family origins or the help of an influential person . Personal progress is the result of individual effort. Because effort and initiative are so important in America , there are many customs that may be different from those practiced in other countries. For example , it is not considered dishonorable to quit a job, even if you have had it for only a short time . Moving from job-to -job , or "job-hopping ", as it is called , is quite acceptable in the United States. Frequently , the opportunity to change jobs offers workers a chance to move up to a better position. Americans like to move from place to place trying new jobs, meeting new people and living in different parts of the country. "Job-hopping" also gives employers a chance to benefit from the new ideas and skills that different people bring to their jobs even if such people are employed for only a short time.三,文化差异(Culture Difference): 真实还是礼貌? Truth or Courtesy ?Just as the degree of individual ******* that exists in America seems loose and therefore uncomfortable to many visitors . In many countries , people will tell you what they think you want to here , whether or not it is true. To them , this is the polite thing to do. To Americans it is considered confusing -even dishonest -to avoid telling the true facts. even if avoiding the truth is done only to be polite . It is helpful to remember that different cultures consider some matters more important than others . Wit Americans , however, trust and truth are most important. One of the worst tings that can be said about someone in America is that " you cannot trust him" Considering such differences in values among the many cultures of the world , it is natural that misunderstandings [1] will occur . "How far is it to the next town ?" an American asks a man standing by the edge of a road . In some countries , because the man realizes the traveler is tired and eager to reach the next village, he will politely say , ' Just down the road ". e thinks this is more encouraging ., gentler , and therefore the answer the traveler wants to hear. So the American drives alone for many more hours before he comes to the village. The traveler is angry , feeling "tricked". He thinks that the man has purposely lied to him because he must have know quite will well what the distance was. If a visitor to the United States asked an American standing at the edge of a road how far the next town was, the American would think it dishonest if he said it was near when he knew it was really 24 miles away. Although he , too , would be sympathetic with the tired traveler , he would say, "You have a long way to go yet ; it is at least 24 miles more. " The traveler might be disappointed , but he would know what to expect, and there would be no misunderstanding.[1] misunderstanding n. 误会, 误解四,文化差异(Culture Difference):权威 AuthorityIn many countries , authority is seldom , if ever, questioned , either because it is highly respected , or because it is feared . Sometimes , too, Because rank has been important in certain societies for a long time, people have been trained never to question those in authority .. For example , children are not expected to question their teachers in school .It may be considered improper for young businessmen to suggest ideas that differ from those of older, more experienced members of the business. In other countries, including America, children are trained to question and search for answers . When a child asks a question, he will often be told to go to the library and find the answer for himself. By the time students reach the age of 14 or 15, they may be developing exciting new ideas in all fields of science and the arts . To encourage such creativity [1] , there are many national prizes offered to students , every year for their scientific discoveries and artistic accomplishments. This interest in questioning and searching may be considered by some people as bad for young people's manners , that young people lack respect for authority . This impression may be created when visitors notice young Americans asking questions and arguing with older people . However , this is because many Americans have a different attitude toward authority than may exist in other areas of the world . In a work or business situation, ideas are freely and openly discussed and argued. It is important to remember tat it is the person's ideas that are being questioned, not the individual himself.. The two are quite separate. The purpose of the searching , questioning , and arguing is to find the facts in a particular situation, and therefore a solution, so that the work of the business can progress in the most effective manner possible. As was mentioned earlier, you may notice the some questioning in social conversations . Although some individuals may think that Americans are rude because of their direct manner with people, they are merely trying to learn more about your ideas. [1] creativity n. 创造力, 创造五,文化差异(Culture Difference):美国社会正在该变 American Society is ChangingIn many nations , everyday activities are done in a planned , orderly manner. For example , formal relationships among people may be determined according to customs and habits that have existed for a long time . People visiting an informal country , such as the United States , may find that the American belief in personal initiative or ******* (including the ******* to disagree with those in authority ), and the whole economic system is quits confusing and uncontrolled . To some visitors such *******s are too "loose" and too disorganized to be comfortable. Today the United States i* **periencing great change in every part of society ;therefore life in America may indeed seem confused . Social attitudes are being questioned Americans are wondering: "Is there any morality ?" "Why has the nation never given all of its citizens full opportunity ?""What courses should be taught in school?" "What is the role of women in society ? "As visitors , you will notice that some Americans are beginning to leave the cities and make their homes in small cities and towns where life is quieter and slower . Political beliefs are changing .
